TURA BEACH MENS BOWLS REPORT No 409

Club Bowls

Saturday's semi-finals of the Club Pairs provided two very closely contested low scoring matches with Les Firth and Russell Cook 17 defeating Bill Gilligan (sub for Steve Davies) and Campbell Connal 17/16.And Kel Duncombe and Graham Burton defeating Vic Finlay and Jack Findlay 21/19.

On end 5 and down 3/2 Les and Russell scored a 6 to take the lead 8/3. Bill and Campbell clawed back to level the match 11/11 on end 15. A three on the next end gave the lead back to Les and Russell before 4 shots over the next 4 ends had Bill and Campbell leading 16/15 with one end to play.

Campbell elected to give the mat away and in response found three of his opponents bowls covering the jack with his last bowl to be played. Despite his best effort he could only cut one out to go down by 1 shot.

In the other match the scores were again very close being level 6\6 end 6, 10/10 end 9, before Kel and Graham recorded 11 shots to 3 over the next 9 ends to lead 21/13 with 3 ends remaining.

Vic and Jack rallied with 6 shots over the last 3 ends but could not bridge the gap going down 19/21.

Like the most scripted performance Sunday's Final, Les Firth and Russell Cook verses Kel Duncomb and Graham Burton provided the classic end to the Club Pairs, with a show down that went to the last bowl.

After end 12 the scores were level at 10/10, again level 12/12 end 14 and after 21 ends level at 18/18 when Russell's last bowl fell an inch short of victory.

The extra end toss was won by Russell who elected to give the mat to Kel. Kel responded with a fantastic first bowl right on the jack. Both teams traded blow for blow but could not take the shot from Kel's first bowl until, with the bowl of the event Russell displaced Kel's shot bowl to snatch victory.

As a demonstration of the support Tura Bowlers provide to each other, on both Saturday's semi-finals and Sunday's final more than 20 spectators braved the very cold conditions to watch a great two afternoons on Bowls.
