TURA BEACH MENS BOWLS REPORT No 368State BowlsCongratulations to our Ladies on their magnificent performances in winning both grade 3and 4 flags in the State Pennant playoffs at Coffs Harbour last week. This was a truly outstanding achievement for a club of our size that has bowling clubs across the state questioning “where the heck is Tura Beach”.
District Bowls.
Les Firth and Russell Cook are the 2009 District Pairs Champion of Champions defeating Tathra’s Steve Hunt and Gerry Lay 23/21 on Saturday, August 1 in a remarkable finish at Tura Beach.
Les and Russell started slowly while the Tathra team, playing great bowls ran to a10/1 lead. Each time Les and Russell closed the gap Tathra would kick away again to a 10 shot lead. However, despite trailing by big margins through most of the match Les and Russell hung on closing the gap to 4 shots with two ends to play.
Three shots on end 20 had them trailing by 1 shot with 1 end to play. Great lead bowls by Les set up the head that he and Russell built on, leaving the Tathra team little opportunity to hold on to their lead. When Gerry’s last bowl, a weighted shot whistled through the head without making contact Tura were holding 4 shots and the match without Russell last bowl.
